MechanAIc's AI gives diagnostic guidance from a description of your problem — not a certain diagnosis, and not a substitute for your vehicle's factory service information. Always confirm procedures and torque specifications against the manufacturer's manual before buying parts or starting a job. For anything involving brakes, steering, suspension, fuel, or airbags, use proper equipment and, if you're unsure, consult a professional. If something suggests an immediate driving hazard, don't drive the vehicle until it's checked.
OBD2 adapters & Bluetooth
What kind of OBD2 adapter do I need?
MechanAIc works with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) ELM327-style adapters. On iPhone this is important: iPhones cannot connect to older "classic Bluetooth" ELM327 dongles — you need a BLE model. Adapters known to use BLE include Veepeak BLE+, vLinker FS, and OBDLink CX. Many generic adapters also work; the app lists every named Bluetooth device it sees so you can pick yours even if we don't recognize the name.
Where is the OBD2 port on my car?
On most vehicles built in 1996 or later (in the U.S.), the 16-pin OBD2 port is under the dashboard on the driver's side, near the steering column. Some are behind a small cover or panel. Plug in the adapter with the ignition on.
The app can't find my adapter. What should I check?
- Make sure the adapter is a BLE model (see above), especially on iPhone.
- Turn the ignition to "on" (or run the engine) so the adapter has power.
- Enable Bluetooth and grant MechanAIc the Bluetooth permission when asked.
- If you previously paired the adapter in your phone's system Bluetooth settings, remove it there — ELM327 adapters connect through the app, not system pairing.
- Unplug the adapter for a few seconds and plug it back in to reset it.
Does clearing codes fix the problem?
No. Clearing a code turns off the light but doesn't repair the underlying issue — if the fault is still present, the code will come back. Clearing codes also resets emissions-readiness monitors, which can cause you to fail a smog/inspection test until the monitors re-run. Diagnose first, fix, then clear.
Which cars support hybrid battery health?
Hybrid traction-battery readings rely on manufacturer-enhanced diagnostics, which vary by make and model. Support is strongest on vehicles whose enhanced data MechanAIc understands; on unsupported models you'll still get standard OBD2 codes and live data. We're expanding hybrid coverage over time.
AI diagnostics, receipts & oil reports
How accurate is the AI mechanic?
The AI is a knowledgeable starting point that reasons about your specific vehicle and repair history, but it works from your description — not a hands-on inspection. Treat it as expert guidance to narrow things down, and always verify before buying parts or performing safety-critical work. See the safety note above.
Is there a limit on AI questions and scans?
Yes — to keep the service running sustainably there are daily limits on AI questions and photo/receipt/oil scans. If you hit a limit, it resets at midnight UTC. If limits are a problem for your use, let us know at support@wrenchandbyte.com.
What happens to the photos I send to the AI?
Photos you send for AI chat, receipt scanning, or oil-report reading are processed to generate a response and are not stored on our servers. Photos you attach to a logbook entry are stored on your device and backed up to your account so you can restore them on a new phone. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Account & data
How do I sign in?
You can sign in with a one-time code sent to your email address (works on any device) or with Sign in with Apple on iPhone. Signing in enables backup and restore of your logbook and photos.
Will my logbook transfer to a new phone?
Yes. As long as you're signed in, your vehicles, repairs, warranties, and photos are backed up to your account. Sign in on the new device and your data restores automatically.
How do I delete my account and data?
Open the app, go to Account → Delete Account. This permanently removes your account, your backed-up logbook, your photos, and your analytics events from our servers, and revokes your Apple sign-in grant if you used one. Data stored on your device is removed when you delete it in-app or uninstall the app. You can also email us to request deletion.
Do you sell my data or show ads?
No. We don't sell your data, we don't use advertising trackers or ad identifiers, and we don't collect your location. See the Privacy Policy.
